The students are working hard to complete their mystery stories. Many are behind and should try to work on the story at home. The students can access their school accounts by going to the Norkam Secondary website and clicking on the NX Client link in the left hand corner. Use the drop down menu to choose AE Perry Elementary, then log in like you do at school.
 
May 7th-11th 05/07/2012
 
The last 8 weeks of school and so much still to do. Friday is our school track meet. The students will be picking 5 events to compete in. The results will determine who is chosen to represent AE Perry at the zone track meet at Hillside Stadium Tuesday, May 22nd. The students need to make sure they have proper gym strip, water bottles and sunscreen for Friday's meet. Our play is coming along great. Most students have their lines memorized and we are beginning to use prohttp://www.cruisenow.com/disney-cruise-lineps. We are on schedule to be ready to present to classes and parents at the beginning of June.

READING
This week, we will be completing chapters 11-13 in Sammy Keyes.
WRITING
The students are getting close to finishing typing their mystery stories. We will then spend some time editing them. We will end the year learning about poetry.
MATH
This week we are learning about polygons and perimeter.
SCIENCE
We continue to learn about simple machines. All students should be working on Rube Goldbergs at home.
 
April 17th-20th 04/18/2012
 
A relatively quiet week.....so far. Please continue to help you child learn his or her lines for our play. We can't begin the acting part until lines are memorized.

READING
We completed chapter 5 of Sammy Keyes today.
WRITING
After several weeks of planning, the students have now begun typing their multi-paragraph stories. This will be due May 3rd.
MATH
We are learning about the metric system this week. This includes units of length (metres, centimetres, millimetres and kilometres), units of mass (grams, centigrams, milligrams and kilograms), and units of capacity (litres, centilitres, millilitres and kilolitres). 
SOCIAL STUDIES
We have finished learning about government, the election process and immigration. We are having a test on Tuesday, April 24th. 
SCIENCE
We continue to learn about simple machines.

Short weeks...don't really seem short. A reminder that next Monday is a professional development day, so there will be no school for the kids. Please continue to help your child learn his or her lines for our play. We can't begin the acting part until the lines are memorized.

READING
We did chapter 5 of Sammy Keyes this week.
WRITING
After several days of planning, the students are now ready to start writing their multi-paragraph mystery stories. These will be due the beginning of May.
SPELLING
Week 4 post-test is tomorrow.
MATH
We just finished our unit on variables and equations (algebra). Most students did well on this unit. Please help your child with the corrections, then sign the test and have it returned to me. We will now be talking about measurement.
SCIENCE
We continue to learn about simple machines.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We are learning about the three levels of government in Canada, the electoral process and immigration.

 
 
April 2nd-5th 04/02/2012
 
I love 4 day weeks! :-)  Don't forget that Friday and next Monday are non-school days due to Easter. A reminder for all students who have lines in our play to get them memorized. Those with major roles should focus on one scene at a time. I want all lines memorized by the middle of April, so we can begin the acting part.  

READING
This week we are completing chapter 4 of Sammy Keyes. The students are getting much better at taking notes as they listen to the book being read. They will not get a copy of the novel, as the focus is on listening skills and note-taking.
WRITING
The students continue to plan their multi-paragraph mystery stories. They will begin writing them very soon.
MATH
We are learning about variables and equations (pre-algebra). Most students are having a lot of success. There will be daily homework questions. Please also encourage your child to work on mastery of the multiplication and division facts.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Tomorrow the students will begin a four-period webquest to do with our three levels of government, elections, and immigration. They will get 4 periods at school, but they can also work on it at home, if they have internet access.
SCIENCE
We continue to learn about simple machines

We did a quiz today on International Hazard Symbols. Please sign it and have your child return it to me.

 
March 26th-30th 03/28/2012
 
Spring is finally here?!?  A reminder that Friday is an early closure day (12:30). If you would like to speak to me about your child's progress, please phone or email me to arrange a time to meet. We have begun practicing our play Peggy the Pint-sized Pirate. If you child has a part with lines, please help him or her memorize them. We will hopefully be ready to present it by late May or early June.

READING
Chapters 2 and 3 of Sammy Keyes and the Dead Giveaway are due today.
WRITING
The students are well on their way with planning their multi-paragraph mystery stories.
This will take several weeks to complete.
MATH
We just finished a unit on graphing and will begin learning about variables and equations (pre-algebra).
SCIENCE
We began a unit on simple machines. The students should be looking for household items to use to build a Rube Goldberg, which is a complex design using multiple simple machines.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will beginning a study of government (national, provincial and local).
HACE
We are working through a Worksafe BC program. They have a quiz on Monday about the international hazard symbols.

 
 
Three weeks until Spring Break....... Good luck to the boys and girls' basketball teams who made it to the second round in the playoffs. Today the class had a great time learning and playing wheel chair basketball. Each of these fancy wheel chairs is worth $5000...Wow!

READING
We finished Moses, Me and Murder. The last book report report is due March 12th. By then the grade 5s should have completed four and the grades 6s should have completed five.
WRITING

We starting discussing and planning the mystery story, which each student will write over the next two months.
SPEAKING and LISTENING
The solo debates will be tomorrow morning.
MATH
We are learning about integers and order of operations (BEDMAS). The grade fives are just being introduced to these concepts, whereas the 6s will be responsible for learning them.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The culture projects will be presented on Friday (March 2nd)
SCIENCE
We will begin learning about simple machines. The students need to start bringing in recycled materials to build a Rube Goldberg.

 
 
The last full week of February. A few reminders. The grade six students received information about course selection for next year at Brock Middle School. They need to have their course selection sheet returned by Monday, February 27th. There is an information meeting for parents tonight (Feb21st) at 7:oo p.m.  in the Brock Middle School library. This Friday is a professional development day, so there will be no school. All teachers in the district will be at workshops.

READING
We will be completing Moses, Me and Murder this week. There will be a quiz next week. The third book report for grade 5s is due Thursday, February 23rd. The fourth book report for the 6s is due Monday, February 27th. 
WRITING
The fairy tales, except for a couple students, are finished. The students will now self-assess their fairy tales and then I will assess them. Our binding machine is in for repairs, so I will be looking to borrow one from another school to bind all the fairy tales.
SPEAKING and LISTENING
The students will receive another debate topic this week. They will be doing a solo debate next week.
MATH
We had a quiz this week on ratio and percent. Please help your son or daughter with corrections, then sign and return it to the school. 
SOCIAL STUDIES
The students continue to work on their culture projects. They are due to be presented next Friday (March 2nd).
SCIENCE
The students had a final test yesterday and today on extreme environments. Our next topic will be simple machines.


 
 
It is a fairly busy week. Tomorrow we have our third Young People's Concert. The students will be watching the Goh Ballet perform. In the afternoon, there is a Valentine's dance. It will cost $2 to attend the dance. The boys' basketball team will leave at 2:00 tomorrow for their game in Barriere. A reminder that next Tuesday (21st), the grade 6 students will meet with the Brock Middle School counselors to start course selection for next year. There is also a meeting for parents @ 7:00 p.m. (Tuesday 21st) in the Brock Library if you have any questions.

READING
On Friday we will be completing Moses, Me and Murder chapters  13 and 14. The third book report is due on Wednesday for the 6s and February 23rd for the 5s.
WRITING
We are finally getting to the end for the fairy tales. They are all due next Monday (Feb. 20th). The students will then complete a self-assessment, before I formally assess them.
SPEAKING AND LISTENING
The students are in groups of two or three preparing for a debate on Wednesday. The first debate will be in groups and the second debate they will do solo.
MATH
We continue to learn about percent and ratio. It would help greatly if each student could purchase a basic calculator to use the rest of the year.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The culture projects are coming along great. They are due March 2nd, when they will be presented to the class.
 
 
READING
We will be completing chapters 11 and 12 of Moses, Me and Murder on Wednesday. The second book report for the grade five students is due on Thursday. The third report for the grade six students is due February 15th.

WRITING
Slowly, but surely the fairy tales are getting completed. They are all due by February 20th.
LISTENING and SPEAKING
The students will soon be getting a topic to research for a debate. They  will need to develop strong arguments for both sides of their argument because they will not know what side they are arguing for until the day of the debate.
MATH
We began learning about ratio today.
SOCIAL STUDIES
They are well into their culture projects. They will need to be completed and ready to present by March 2nd.
SCIENCE
This week we learned about caves and how they are an extreme environment.
